Chapter 1- Examples of test questions:

  • Be able to estimate and measure lengths to the nearest meter and centimeter.  Students need to have an idea of the length of their arms, hands, or feet, or width of their palms or fingers to help them estimate length in other objects.  For example, if the width of a finger is 1 cm, they can estimate the number of fingers-wide an object is.  This helps them to estimate its width in centimeters.

    • The red jump rope is 5 m long.  It is 221 cm longer than that blue jump rope.  How long is the blue jump rope?  Give your answer in centimeters.
    • The pink ribbon is 3 m 4 cm long.  The orange ribbon is 298 cm long.  Which is longer?

Chapter 2- Examples of test questions:

  • The kilometer is the standard unit of measurement in the metric system for longer distances.  1 kilometer = 1000 meters.
  • In the U.S. standard system, miles are used to measure longer distances.  A mile is longer than a kilometer.  1 mile equals 1.6093 km, 6 miles is about 10 km, and 60 miles is about 100 km.  For example, if the post office is a little over a mile away, it is about 2 km away.  A town about 60 miles away is about 100 km away.
  • Fill in the blank with km, m, or cm.
    • The length of the book is about 120 ___.
    • The distance between Disneyland Resort in California and Los Angeles is about 42 ___.
    • The distance from the classroom door to the teacher’s desk is about 9 ___.
  • Which of these is the kilometer used to measure?

  • Write 5 km 720 m in meters.

    • Frank lives 7 km 53 m from the mall.  Ed lives 762 m from the same mall.  Who lives farther away?

Chapter 3- Examples of test questions:

  • Information to know:
    • 1 inch = 2.54 cm (approximately two and a half centimeters)
    • 1 foot = 30.48 cm (approximately 30 centimeters)
    • 1 yard = 0.9144 m (approximately 1 meter)
    • 1 meter = 1.0936 yards (approximately 1 yard which is approximately 40 inches)
  • When adding and subtracting compound units:
    • 1 yard is renamed as 3 feet
    • 1 foot is renamed as 12 inches

    • Andy bought 4 yd 3 ft of black cloth and 5 yd 7 ft of gray cloth.  A yard of cloth cost $3.  How much did he pay for the cloth?

 

Chapter 4- Examples of test questions:

  • In the U.S., distances are measured in miles rather than in kilometers.  A mile is longer than a kilometer; 1 mile equals 1.6093 miles.
  • 1 mile = 5280 feet = _____ yards
  • Sally walks 4 miles to the school and the same distance back each day.  What is the total distance she walks each day?
  • What is the distance between Towns B and C?  What is the distance between Towns A and C?
    • Town A to Town B = 58 miles
    • The distance between Town B and C is 21 miles less than the distance between Town A and B.
  • Eric traveled from Town B to Town D By going through Town C.  What was the distance he traveled?
