Spelling Information
Phonograms
The first week of school is spent reviewing the 70 phonograms. Students are expected to have the 70 phonograms memorized. Each month there will be a 70 phonogram test.
Spelling Words
Four new words and one bonus word are introduced each day.
Spelling Tests
Spelling tests are given every day once the first words have been introduced. The first spelling test will have the four words plus the bonus word. The second spelling test will have eight words plus two bonus words. The third and subsequent tests will have twelve spelling words and three bonus words. As new words are added, older words are removed.
The bonus words are only counted toward the total if they are written correctly. Students will have a total of 12 - 15 words depending on how many bonus words were correctly spelled. A percentage will be written at the top of spelling tests.
Letters are expected to be formed correctly. If a letter is formed incorrectly, the word will be considered incorrect.
Markings
Students that need a challenge will be expected to mark three words on their spelling tests. Markings include underlining multi-letter phonograms and writing rules on why a word is spelled the way it is.
